21 and 23, Market Place

21 and 23 Market Place are two houses and business premises located in Saxmundham. This row of buildings dates back to the 17th century and was converted into a single house in the early 18th century. It underwent alterations and was incorporated into the former Angel Inn in the mid-18th century before being converted back into two houses around 1980. The buildings are timber-framed, plastered, and colourwashed, with a pantile roof featuring a brick ridge stack positioned to the right of centre and three roof lights.

The exterior showcases a two-storey, four-window front. There is a passageway at the left centre, leading to entrance doors. To the right of this passageway, there are two 3/3 20th-century horned sash windows, with the one on the extreme right filling a former carriage arch. To the left, there is a 2/2 20th-century horned sash window and a 3/3 19th-century horned sash window. The first floor has four 20th-century casements with glazing bars, two of which feature hoodmoulds on label stops. The rear of the building was formerly jettied but was rebuilt without a jetty during the late 20th-century conversion.

Inside, the buildings have a heavy scantling timber frame with jowled principal studs and tension braces in the corners. Blocked mullioned windows can be seen in No. 23. The roof consists of cambered tie beams but has been rebuilt above.
