Description

This building in the Market Place, Saxmundham, comprises four houses, originally dating to the late 16th century, with later alterations and conversion to residential use around 1980. The building is timber-framed and rendered with a colourwashed finish, topped by a pantile roof with brick stacks centrally and at the left end. The front elevation exhibits an eleven-window range, with irregularly placed windows, predominantly 2 and 3-light casements from the 20th century. There are three 20th-century doors at ground level, and a 20th-century door to number 19 accessed through a passageway on the far left. A three-light metal casement window from the early 19th century is located on the first floor to the right. At first floor, a single-light metal casement window sits above the door to number 15, with a four-light mullioned window to the immediate right. The rear of the building was originally jettied, but has been largely rebuilt during the 1980s conversion, along with the two-storey cross wings. Internally, the building features heavy chamfered bridging beams and chamfered joists. The interior rooms do not reflect the original 16th-century layout. Historically, the building operated as the Angel Inn from at least the 18th century, and there is no number 13 in the sequence.
