Description
No. 16 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the mid-17th century and was altered in the late 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with some rebuilding in red brick, and features plain tile roofs with cresting and bargeboarded gable ends.
The exterior has a two-storey front with a slightly projecting cross wing that has an attic at the left end. On the ground floor, there are shop windows made of plate glass, with a glazed shop door located towards the right end. The first floor includes an early 19th-century three-light casement window, and there is a 20th-century casement window in the attic of the cross wing. The right side of the building has a gable wall that jetties out at the first and attic storeys, with a moulded and brattished bressummer above the upper jetty. The ground floor is lit by a mid-20th-century plate-glass display window, while the first floor is illuminated by an early 19th-century three-light casement window. The interior has not been inspected.
