Description
Holton Mill is a post windmill dating from the mid-18th century, with significant later alterations and rebuilding. It was restored between 1966 and 1968 and is now preserved by Suffolk County Council. The mill features a timber-framed and weatherboarded buck with three floors, and a tarred brick roundhouse with two floors, one of which is below ground. The roundhouse and the fantail are 19th-century additions. The mill has four dummy sails, and while most of the machinery has been removed, the cast iron windshaft and wooden brakewheel remain as 19th-century replacements. Notable early carved inscriptions on the side girts include 'I.Swan 174-' (likely from 1749), 'W.Bedwell', and 'John.Swan 1754'.
