Description
Upthorpe Windmill is a post windmill dated 1807, which was restored in 1939 but is now derelict. It features a timber-framed and weatherboarded buck with a roof covered in iron sheeting, and a low roundhouse made of red brick. The windmill retains the remains of two patent sails, with steps and fantail supports at the rear; however, the fantail blades were removed in 1969 and are stored inside the mill. The machinery inside is intact and includes a wooden clasp-arm brakewheel with iron teeth mounted on a wooden windshaft, an iron wallower, and an iron spurwheel with wooden cogs mounted on a wooden upright shaft. There are also two pairs of underdriven mill stones in the breast, along with a complete tentering system and sack hoist. A third pair of belt-driven stones located in the tail was removed in 1939. The windmill is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
