Description
The Holton St Peter War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is located at the southernmost point of the churchyard, approximately 75 meters southeast of the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a plain stone Latin cross that stands about 2.4 meters high, mounted on a substantial octagonal plinth and square base. At the base of the shaft, there is a carved shield inscribed with the years 1914 – 1919.
On the south-west face of the plinth, the main inscription reads: "IN PROUD AND AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF THOSE BRAVE SONS OF HOLTON, WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR THEIR FRIENDS, THEIR HOMES, AND THEIR COUNTRY, IN THE GREAT WAR." The names of the fallen are listed on the south and west faces of the plinth, each topped with the inscription “THE GLORIOUS DEAD.”
The rear of the plinth includes the inscription 1939 – 1945 followed by the names of those commemorated.
