Description

Laburnam House is a house that also incorporates a former school house, dating from the late 16th to 17th century, with the front range (the former school house) built in 1748. The building has undergone later alterations, including a 20th-century conversion of the school house. It features a timber frame, part of which is built in brick and rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles, while the rear extension has a slate roof. There are red brick stacks present.

The earlier range is L-shaped with a later addition at the angle, and the front range projects to create a T-plan. The house has two storeys and a single-storey extension. A 20th-century board door is located on the left side of the front range, and there is a stable door from around 1985 in the cross range at the angle with the front range. Throughout the building, there are 20th-century casement windows. The front range has a half-hipped roof, while the rear and cross ranges have hipped roofs, and the extension has a pent roof. The external stack on the right side of the front range and the left side of the rear range have been partly rebuilt and are now incorporated into the extension.

Inside, some of the framing is visible. The earlier range features chamfered longitudinal beams with curved stops and exposed joists, along with studded walls. The roof throughout has clasped purlins. The front range was originally built as a schoolroom with a single storey, and a ceiling was inserted later. The building is included for its group value.
