Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Holton St Mary. It dates from the 13th to the 15th century and was restored in 1882. The church is constructed of flint with ashlar dressings and has plain tile roofs. It features an apparently truncated west tower, an aisleless two-bay nave, and a chancel. The west tower has two stages on a flushwork plinth, diagonal offset buttresses, a later brick embattled parapet, and some patching at the summit. There is a two-light Perpendicular west window. The 19th-century south porch contains two pews with poppyhead bench ends. The south door is moulded and has a hoodmould with worn head stops, surmounted by a pointed niche. The nave has two-light curvilinear windows, and there is a 14th-century moulded north door with worn head stops. The chancel is at a lower level and features restored Y-tracery windows and a moulded priest's door, along with two offset buttresses. The east window has been renewed with intersecting tracery, and the east wall may have been rebuilt. A vestry is located to the north.
Inside, the walls are rendered, and there is a 19th-century barrel roof. The 15th-century tower arch rests on half-octagonal responds with moulded capitals. The church also has a 15th-century octagonal panelled font on an earlier base and a 13th-century piscina with a cusped arch on nook shafts with moulded capitals.
