Description

Mayfields is a house located on the northeast side of the B1070 in Holton St Mary. It is probably from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations from the late 17th century. The building is timber-framed, with some areas covered in painted brick, and features a plain tile roof and red brick stacks. It has two storeys and a front range that consists of four bays. There is an inserted central stair hall, which likely replaced an original lobby entry, and three gabled cross ranges at the rear, with the left one extending further.

The front entrance has a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set beneath a 20th-century gabled porch supported by brackets. On either side of the door are two 20th-century casement windows, and to the right is a 16-pane sash window in a flush architrave. The left bay has been underbuilt in brick. On the first floor, there are 20th-century sliding sashes and a top-hinged casement window to the left. The roof is swept and hipped to the left, with an off-centre stack to the left and a large external stack with saw-tooth corniced shafts at the right gable end.

At the rear, there are three gabled cross wings of similar proportions, with the left wing extended by a lower range. Inside, much of the framing is exposed, including jowled posts and studded walls, with some down braces visible. There are inglenooks with chamfered bressummers at both stacks, which have been somewhat rebuilt. The building features chamfered beams with curved stops and exposed joists in parts. Additionally, there are two 18th-century pilastered corner cupboards with keyed round arches and shaped shelves, as well as a clasped purlin roof.
