Description

Raydon House Nursing Home is a house, originally known as Chy-An-Daunce, dating back to the 17th century, with a rear cross wing. A front wing was added in the late 18th or early 19th century, and further extended in the 19th century and to the rear in the 20th century. The house is timber-framed, with rendered walls; the 19th-century section is built with white brick. It has red brick stacks and a plain tile roof.

The main front of the house has two storeys and three bays, arranged around a central stairhall. A central Ionic porch has replaced columns and an open pedimented hood, sheltering a six-panel door. Long sash windows with glazing bars are set within flush architraves. Upstairs, 16-pane sashes are flanked by a 12-pane sash, all with flush architraves. A single-storey canted bay window projects from the right return. A single-storey range from the 19th century extends to the left, featuring a central canted bay with plate glass windows and a pyramidal roof. A 20th-century brick addition is located to the rear and is of no particular interest.

Inside, the staircase has stick balusters, column newels, and a ramped handrail. The rear wing retains features of earlier construction, including chamfered jowled posts, one of which has an arch brace.
