Description

Raydon Hall is a house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the probable early 16th century, with a later 16th-century cross wing added to the right. 20th-century alterations have been made. The house is timber-framed and rendered with a plain tile roof and red brick stacks. It has an L-shaped layout.

The main hall range has a lobby entry with a 20th-century half-glazed door and a jamb light under a hood. There are 20th-century casement windows throughout, with a small canted bay to the left, and three windows on the first floor. A swept roof extends to a ridge stack. The cross wing was originally jettied to the hall side, but its right return was rebuilt in the 17th century in red brick, incorporating an external offset stack whose upper part was reconstructed in the 20th century.

Inside, the hall range features a red brick inglenook with chamfered jambs under a chamfered bressumer, alongside jowled posts with roll moulding and a chamfered transverse beam with bar stops. On the first floor, there are jowled posts and blocked 4-light diamond mullion windows. A chamfered arched fireplace is also present. In the cross wing, on the ground floor, there is a deep moulded beam with run-out stops and moulded joists. The roof of the cross wing is of a clasped purlin type with windbraces. The main range roof to the right of the stack has been rebuilt, but the section to the left is said to retain crown posts. The hall range to the left of the stack, which is in separate occupation, was not inspected.
