Description

Timbers is a house likely dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with significant later additions and alterations. It features a timber frame that is rendered, topped with a thatched roof and red brick stacks. The building has a single-storey and attic layout arranged in a three-cell plan with a lobby entry that is now blocked. There is a hipped thatched porch which has been glazed, and the current entrance is to the right, consisting of a 20th-century half-glazed door under a tiled porch. To the right of the entrance, there is a 20th-century three-light casement window. The centre has 20th-century casements with leaded lights on the ground floor and below the eaves, while to the left of the porch, there is a 20th-century shallow bow window and a small fixed light. An eyebrow dormer features a 20th-century casement. The house has off-centre stacks at the right end.

Inside, the central bay was originally open to the roof and includes a red brick inglenook with a timber bressumer. There are two chamfered bridging beams with step stops and exposed joists, along with a deep timber ground sill and some wall studding. On the first floor, further framing is exposed, including a jowled post and a cambered tie-beam that is incorporated into the partition wall, as well as a rear wall plate with a shutter groove. The roof has not been inspected but the owner reports it to be of common rafter type and smoke blackened.
