Description

BERGH APTON SUNNYSIDE, West side TM 39 NW Cottage approx 80m 5/29 SW of Holly Lodge - II

Cottage ornee, early C19. Coursed limestone blocks with hipped reed-thatched roof. 1½ storeys, originally square on plan, now extended to north. South facade has loggia on four timber columns each composed of four clustered shafts with square bases and capitals. Central ground floor and overhanging attic 2-light casements with leaded glazing eliptical headed lights. To the north, a C20 flat roofed extension at north-west corner; small single storey pantiled lean-to on north wall. Thatched attic dormer blocked in brick. Chimney stack on north side of ridge with three linked octagonal red brick shafts. To the east, a central doorway flanked by two quatrefoil lights, one with leaded glazing. Doorway has re-set C16 four centred stone arch under a square head with foliage carving in spandrels set on moulded polygonal capital. Above the doorway, a thatched dormer, its opening blocked and containing two re-set sections of a vaulted canopied niche with crocketted pinnacles and ogee headed arch, with tall cusped arcading above; C14 of ecclesiastical provenance.
