Description

Berg Apton House is an early 19th-century country house. It is constructed of whitewashed brick with reed thatched roofs. The house has one and two storeys with attics, and an irregular plan. The south and east elevations feature sash windows with glazing bars; those on the east front have pointed arched heads with intersecting glazing bars and drip moulds. A gable at the south-west corner has a ground floor sash extending down to floor level, and the gable apex is topped with a small lancet window. There are two full dormer windows with half-hipped roofs, and chimney stacks with square shafts linked by ornamental brick caps. The east front features square-headed ground floor sashes with Gothick top lights under label moulds, and three eyebrow dormers with 'Y' tracery heads. The entrance door is a six-panel design with the upper four panels glazed, and is sheltered by a thatched porch on timber posts. A half-hipped dormer at the north-east corner has a two-light Gothick casement, with a C20 casement window below. The fenestration on the north side has been slightly altered and renewed, but retains 1 and 2-light pointed casements, some with leaded glazing. A small walled courtyard is situated on the west side. A later loggia with a hipped thatched roof has been added to the south-west corner.
