Description
The Thurton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also includes a later addition for the Second World War. It is located near the entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Ethelbert, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial features a stone wheel-head cross, with the letters IHS carved at its center and strapwork carvings on both the cross and the shaft. It has a shouldered and chamfered plinth, resting on a single-stepped base. The front (south) face of the plinth is inscribed in painted lettering, honoring the names of parish members who died in military service during the Great War from 1914 to 1919, as well as those who fought and died between 1939 and 1945, concluding with the phrase "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH."
