Description
The war memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Bergh Apton was unveiled on 28th May 1920. It is made of stone and features an octagonal base topped by a pedestal, which has a plinth, a tapered shaft, and a gabled cross. Inscriptions are located on the sides of the plinth and on the base. The north side reads "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BERGH APTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 MAY THEY REST IN PEACE," with an additional inscription on the base of the north face stating "AND OF THOSE WHO FELL 1939-1945." The south side honors their sacrifice with the words "THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES TO SERVE GOD THEIR KING AND THEIR COUNTRY IN DEFENCE OF TRUTH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE." The names of those remembered are inscribed on the east and west faces. This memorial serves as an important reminder of the local impact of the world wars and is a distinct tribute to the fallen, holding group value with the adjacent church and other monuments in the churchyard.
