Description

White Willows is a house built in the 17th century, with later alterations. It features a rendered and whitewashed timber frame topped with a reed thatch roof, complete with brick ridge and left end stacks. The house has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and is single storey with an attic. The front has a three-window range of wooden mullion and transom windows, with three similar dormers above. There is a heavy plank door located to the centre right in front of the stack, which is sheltered by an open thatched porch. The left end has a projecting stack and a three-light gable window, while the right end has a two-light gable window. The rear is mainly blank at present, but building work for an addition is currently in progress.

Inside, tall panel framing is mostly visible, including in the gable ends and partitions. Heavy jowled posts support chamfered bridging beams. There is a brick stack with an open fireplace featuring chamfered corners, and an unusual brick winder stair located behind the stack. The roof consists of principals with wedge-tenoned butt purlins and has provisions for dormers. Plank doors are present throughout. Above the hall chamber fireplace, there is a piece of panelling with fluting and lozenges. This house is comparatively little altered for its period and features the unusual brick winder stair incorporated with the stack.
