Description

Numbers 7 and 8, 9 and 10, along with the linking wall, are two pairs of bungalows built in 1951 by the former Loddon Rural District Council, designed by architects Tayler and Green. These single-storey buildings are constructed of brick and are colourwashed pink, with a black-painted west gable for Nos 7 and 8. Nos 9 and 10 feature yellow-brown facings above a black tarred plinth and have projecting diaper work on the north gable. Both pairs have orange pantiled roofs with scalloped wooden bargeboards, while Nos 9 and 10 have zig-zag cut wooden bargeboards. There are two brick chimneystacks with pitched concrete copings and clay pots. The bungalows have wide frontages and painted steel casement windows.

The buildings are arranged at right angles, with a linking yellow-brown brick screen wall. Nos 7 and 8 face Church Road, while Nos 9 and 10 overlook a small green set back from the road. This development represents the first phase of village housing in Bergh Apton. Although the planning of the individual units is noteworthy, the interiors lack special features. Together with the second phase of development, which includes Nos 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18, this scheme received a Civic Trust Award in 1957 and a Housing Medal in 1961. It is a fine example of the architects' work, serving as a sensitive and self-contained extension to the existing community, effectively utilizing its woodland setting to create a new village green.
