Description
Nos. 17 and 18 Church Road are a pair of bungalows built in 1951 by the former Loddon Rural District Council, designed by architects Tayler and Green. These single-storey buildings are constructed of brick and feature a pantiled roof with wooden bargeboards. They have tall brick chimneystacks topped with pitched concrete copings and clay pots. The bungalows have a wide frontage, steel casement windows, half-glazed entrance doors, boarded doors to stores, and ornamental wood trelliswork. They are linked by a brick wall to Nos. 14, 15, and 16, which also face Church Road, completing this group of buildings.
Together with Nos. 11, 12, and 13, and Nos. 14, 15, and 16, these bungalows were part of the second phase of village housing in Bergh Apton. The completed scheme was awarded a Civic Trust Award in 1957 and a Housing Medal in 1961. This development is an excellent example of the architects' work, serving as a sensitive and self-contained extension to the existing community, and it makes effective use of its woodland setting to create a new 'village green.'
