Description

The barn, now used as a school assembly hall, dates back to 1754 and is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a pantile roof. It features five bays that are defined by brick pilaster strips. The first bay has been converted into a cottage with an inserted chimney stack, while the central bay, which originally had a large entrance, is now infilled. The first and fifth bays contain infilled vertical slits, and the second and third bays have high wood mullioned openings added later. The gables display brick tumbling in and parapet copings, along with owl holes. The southeast gable is marked with a datestone reading "S T B 1754" and has four vertical slits along with a central blocked opening. There is also an inserted opening at the ground floor level. The rear of the barn has a pantiled outshut extending from bays one to four. Inside, the walls are colourwashed brick, with the bays again articulated by brick pilaster strips. The roof features a three-tier staggered purlin system with collars and braced tie beams originating from wall posts. Three bays at the rear open into the outshut, and the lintels for the bay openings are made from reused timbers, one of which is a bridging beam with quarter mouldings and joist mortices. The roof of the outshut is supported by tenoned staggered purlins. This building is included for its group value.
