Description

Milestone No 5, dating from the late 18th century, was created for the Norwich and Thetford Turnpike Trust. It is made of limestone and has a wedge shape, standing 68 cm high with a rounded cap, tapering from 12 cm at the base to 29 cm at the top. The milestone features recessed full-width panels that are inscribed with "NORWICH / 5 / MILES" and "THETFORD / 24 / MILES." The road was turnpiked in 1767, and this milestone is located on the verge of the earlier line of the present road.
