Description

Milestone number 4, located on the south side of Norwich Road in Hethersett, dates from the late 18th century and was created for the Norwich and Thetford Turnpike Trust. This limestone milestone is wedge-shaped, approximately 60 centimeters high, and features a rounded cap, tapering from 14 centimeters at the base to 31 centimeters at the top. It has recessed full-width panels that are inscribed with "NORWICH / 4 / MILES" and "THETFORD / 25 / MILES." The road was turnpiked in 1767.
