Description
The central pergolas, walls, and steps at Waterloo Park were built between 1929 and 1933 by A Sandys Winsch. Constructed from stone, concrete, and wood, the design features two long pergolas that line the north and south sides of the main lawn. These pergolas are elevated on high rubblestone plinths, with square piers topped by simplified capitals that support wooden frames. In the middle and at both eastern ends, steps lead down to the lawn, while additional flights of steps descend to the long border and connect with a retaining wall. This wall is aligned with the central axis of the Bandstand and Pavilion, featuring two flights of curving steps. The pergolas and walls are part of a significant group of structures within the formal layout of Waterloo Park, which is listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II.
