Description
South Gates, Gate Piers, Lodges, Linking Wall, Boundary Walls and Piers are lodges and entrance gates to the park, built around 1850. They are made of gault brick with limestone and stucco dressings, topped with slate roofs. There are square lodge pavilions on the east and west sides of the avenue, each featuring pyramidal slate roofs with finials. The buildings have rusticated brick quoins and dentilled eaves, with windows that have keyed stone surrounds and iron tracery in geometric patterns. Square bay windows with hipped roofs face the avenue, and the entrance doors on the north side have stuccoed surrounds, a keystone, and a canopy on console brackets. The lower wings, which are partly from the 20th century, are located on the east and west sides and feature casements with glazing bars. A chimney stack with a moulded cap sits at the junction between the two blocks.
The central gate piers are made of rusticated gault brick and have carved and moulded stone capitals on console brackets. There are wrought iron gates and cage-type gate piers with scrolled finials. A curved gault brick linking wall, which is pierced and has moulded stone coping, connects the gate piers and lodges. The boundary walls, also made of rusticated gault brick, feature pierced balustrading and terminate in rusticated piers on the east and west sides of the lodges.
