Description
The two lodges at the south gate of Roundhay Park, along with the surrounding walls, gate piers, gates, and bollards, were built in the early 19th century, with the gates added in the later 19th century. The structures are made of ashlar and show traces of white paint, featuring cast-iron gates. The single-storey lodges consist of three bays, with the outer bay set back. They have pilasters that support an entablature with a wide cornice and a surviving blocking course on the right side. Each lodge has two windows and a round-arched niche facing the road, while the doorway faces the drive and is also flanked by pilasters and an entablature. The original shallow slate hipped roofs and small central chimneys are now missing, leaving the lodges roofless, and all interior features have been removed except for the steps leading to the cellars in the right lodge.
The gate piers are approximately 3 meters high, with pilastered sides, deep cornices, and flat capstones. They feature ornate Classical motifs at the top, bottom, and on the lock bands of the double gates, which have spearhead finials. There is a low ashlar wall flanking the right side and a high wall flanking each lodge, both approximately 2.5 meters high and 15 meters long. Slender chamfered conical stone bollards line the curve of the approach road to the gateway.
