Description
The boundary wall to St John's School and Almshouses, built around 1830, is likely designed by Thomas Taylor. Constructed from coursed squared gritstone, the wall features wrought-iron gates and stands between approximately 1 meter and 2 meters high, with an overall length of about 150 meters and a moulded coping.
This wall encloses the west and south sides of the property. There is a narrow pedestrian gate opposite the entrance to St John's School, which has turned walling and two pairs of gate piers with shallow pointed capstones flanking the steps. At the west end, there is an inner and outer pair of gate piers at the entrance to the church precinct, featuring moulded plinths, recessed panelled sides, and steeply gabled capstones.
On the west side of the almshouses, the curving wall includes a narrow and low pedestrian gateway with plain square jambs and a low wrought-iron gate topped with knob finials. The wall concludes at the former vicarage driveway, St John's House, with a square pier that has panelled sides and moulding, topped with a pyramid capstone.
