Description
St John's Church of England Primary School and St John's Almshouses, numbers 1-7, were built around 1830 and later altered in the 20th century. Designed by Thomas Taylor for Stephen Nicholson of Roundhay Park, the buildings are constructed from coursed squared gritstone with ashlar details and slate roofs, showcasing a Tudor style.
The central school block is flanked by two long ranges of single-storey almshouses, each with ten bays. The school features moulded coping on the gable ends, a central gabled porch with a pointed arched doorway, and a base for a crocketed finial at the top of the gable. On either side of the school, there are two large 2-light mullion and transom windows with dripmoulds.
The almshouses have projecting gabled end bays adorned with large ornate barge-boards and pendants, wide eaves, and shallow square bay windows with coved cornices. They also include small 2-light mullioned windows and doorways with dripmoulds, plank doors with cover moulds, and decorative wrought-iron hinges. Stone chimneys are present, although their shafts have been removed. The interior has not been inspected, but an early drawing of the group can be found in Linstrum, page 247.
