Description

These almshouses, dating from 1614, consist of two buildings with a similar design that border the High Street on either side of the central school courtyard. They feature a symmetrical facade with seven windows across, rising to two storeys, and a central three-storey pedimented section that slightly projects. The buildings are constructed from coursed local ashlar stone blocks with flint infilling at the mortar joints, matching the central school block. Modern ashlar dressing is used for the recessed alcoves.

A continuous projecting stone plinth runs across the front of the school yard, serving as a low screen wall topped with early 19th-century cast iron railings. The eaves and gutter are moulded wood, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate, hipped at both ends. The central pediment features a rusticated stone archway with heavy 18th-century cast iron gates, and there is a small square casement window above the archway. A projecting double stone band aligns with the eaves of the side wings. Beneath the pediment, there is a circular boarded window with a square moulded stone surround. The pediment itself is adorned with a painted wooden modillioned entablature and a raking cornice. The windows are painted wooden casements with mullions and transoms, and there are recessed round-headed stone alcoves in the centre of the seven-window facade on both floors.

The side elevations of both almshouse blocks face inward toward the school courtyard, featuring recessed tripartite "Palladian Motif" panels on the ground floor and square projecting stone panels above. There are six stone chimney stacks symmetrically placed on both almshouse blocks. The Sevenoaks School and Almshouses form a group, although this does not include the modern school buildings located to the rear.
