Description
The boundary wall and gates located to the north and east of the churchyard of St John in Colaton Raleigh were likely built around 1875. The wall is constructed from large local river cobbles, featuring a brick plinth and coping topped with crested ridge tiles. The gate piers are made of brick and capped with sandstone ashlar, and the gates themselves are wrought iron. The walls are relatively low and step down slightly as the ground level declines. The coping extends outwards and is supported by closely spaced brick corbels with rounded undersides. The gate piers are square with narrow chamfered and stopped edges, and their caps are low octagonal pyramids with scrolled corners, resting on brick corbels similar to those of the wall. The wrought iron gates vary in style; the narrower eastern gate has rails only up to the lockbar, with the upper panel featuring a cusped arch adorned with scrolls. The northern double gates are simpler, consisting of alternating full-height rails with clover leaf ends.
