Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Baileys Cottages are a pair of cottages likely originating from the 17th century, but they were thoroughly refurbished in 1893, as indicated by a date plaque. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with brick rebuilding; they feature stone rubble or brick stacks topped with late 19th-century Rolle Estate chimney pots.

These two-storey cottages have a two-room plan and face the road to the south-west. No. 1 is located on the right (south-eastern) end, while No. 2 is on the left. Each outer room has an end stack, with the left stack shared with Rose Cottage and the right stack made of exposed brick and slightly projecting. There is also an axial stack in the party wall between the cottages that serves back-to-back fireplaces.

Both cottages have a symmetrical front with two windows, which are 20th-century replacement casements with glazing bars, arranged around a central 20th-century plank door. A limestone plaque is set high in the wall between the cottages, inscribed with the date 1893 and the initials of Mark Rolle. The interiors feature plain carpentry and joinery details, although the roofs were not inspected.

Baileys Cottages form a group with No. 1 Drupes Cottages and Rose Cottage, along with the adjoining barn.
