Description
Hardys Farmhouse is an early 19th-century house that was formerly a farmhouse. It is constructed of plastered cob and stone rubble, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a slate roof. The house features a three-room plan and faces southwest. The right end room is slightly set back from the main front, likely due to the symmetrical section on the left. The entrance hall and staircase are located between the two other rooms. The end rooms have end stacks, while the center room has an outer axial stack. The building is two storeys high.
The overall front has five windows. The left three-window section, which projects slightly forward, is symmetrical and includes ground floor 30-pane (15/15) sashes. On the first floor, there are outer 25-pane (10/15) sashes and a central 20-pane (8/12) sash. This section has a central doorway with a four-panel door behind a porch that has a hipped slate roof supported by timber posts with chamfered edges, block caps, and shaped brackets. The right-hand section features another ground floor 30-pane sash and two additional first floor 25-pane sashes. The eaves project on shaped brackets, and the roof is hipped at each end.
The interior retains much of its original joinery. It is quite rare in Devon to find a farmhouse with its 19th-century windows intact, and the sashes here are particularly unusual.
