Description
Nos. 10 and 12 on Fore Street are a pair of cottages, likely originally built as one house, dating from around 1845. They were probably rebuilt after a fire that occurred in the same year. The cottages are constructed of granite rubble, with a plastered front designed to mimic ashlar. The roof is made of asbestos slate and features gabled ends, with the ridge of No. 10 being higher than that of No. 12.
No. 10 has a rendered right-hand stack and No. 12 has a rendered shaft for its rear lateral stack. The layout may have been influenced by an earlier structure on the site, resulting in a double-depth, two-room cottage for No. 10, which has a left-hand entrance. No. 12, on the left, has a single-depth, two-room plan with a central entrance leading to a lobby lean-to extension at the rear, positioned at an angle to the deeper No. 10.
The cottages are two storeys tall and feature a four-window range, with the windows more closely spaced on the right side (No. 10). The windows are 12-pane sashes with crown glass, dating from around 1845, although No. 10 has a replacement sash without glazing bars on the ground floor. Each cottage has side-panel doors, with the bottom panels flush and small rectangular overlights; No. 12's door has a blind panel. The doorways are set in plain openings with chamfered jambs. There is a lateral stone rubble stack at the rear of No. 12. The interiors and roofs have not been inspected, but the cottages are noted for their largely unaltered mid-19th century facades, which contribute to the group value with Nos. 14, 16, and 18 on Ford Street.
