Description
Geneva Cottage is a house that likely dates from the 18th century, although it may incorporate earlier elements, and has 19th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed of roughcast stone rubble and features a thatched half-hipped roof. There is a rendered axial stack located to the right of the center and a small rendered lateral stack on the front left. The current layout consists of two rooms with central stairs beside the axial stack, which probably served a larger room on the right. The smaller room on the left is heated by a later lateral stack at the front. Originally, the entrance was located at the center but has since been converted into a window.
In the early 19th century, a lean-to outshut was added to the rear of the left-hand room, which was raised in the 20th century and now has a flat roof. The house is positioned at right angles to the road and is two stories tall. The south front has two windows, with the windows mainly located towards the right end. The windows are late 19th-century or early 20th-century four-pane sashes, while the right-hand ground floor features a small 20th-century top-hung window. There is a plank door to the right of the center and a very thin lateral stack on the left. The west gable end facing the road has one four-pane sash window on each floor and a 19th-century glazed and panelled door to the left. The two-story flat-roofed outshut on the left has one four-pane sash window on each floor.
Inside, the right-hand room has a large roughly hewn cross beam, while the left-hand room has an unhewn cross beam and another beam that is boxed in. The straight stairs at the center rise from the former entrance lobby. The feet of the trusses are boxed in and visible in the first floor and roof spaces, which were not accessible during the survey. Geneva Cottage is one of the few thatched-roof buildings that have survived in the center of Moretonhampstead, making it significant to the character of the town.
