Description
Nos. 14 and 16 Fore Street are a pair of cottages built around 1845, likely as a rebuilding after the fire in Fore Street that year. They are constructed from granite rubble with a roughcast front and feature an asbestos slate roof with gabled ends. At the back, there is a central 19th or early 20th-century wing, which has a granite ground floor and a red brick first floor, also with a gable end.
These cottages have an identical two-room layout with central entrances, and they may retain some earlier elements from the rebuilding. The rear wing, added in the late 19th or early 20th century, contains service rooms on the ground floor. The buildings are two storeys high and have four widely spaced windows, which are mid-19th-century 12-pane sashes with crown glass. Each cottage has a plain doorway at the centre, with small blocked rectangular fanlights; No. 14 features a 20th-century door, while No. 16 has a late 19th-century panelled door. The wide gable-ended rear wing adds to the overall character of the cottages. This pair has a minimally altered mid-19th-century front, complete with all its sash windows, and is part of a group that includes Nos. 10 and 12 and No. 18 Fore Street, which adds to their group value.
