Description

Dolphin House, formerly the Dolphin Inn, is a house that likely dates from the 18th century, with some earlier elements, and was repaired and remodeled after a fire in 1816. It is constructed of granite rubble and rendered on the sides and rear. The roof is a bitumen-coated slate hipped roof with lead rolls at the hips, slightly lower at the rear, featuring a large chimney stack at the junction of the two roof levels, topped with what appears to be a moulded cap and a later rendered shaft. The building has a double depth plan with two main front rooms on either side of the entrance passage, which has smaller service rooms at the rear. The passage widens at the back where the stairs are located. The house has three storeys and a cellar, with a symmetrical three-window range. The ground and first floor feature mid-19th century 12-pane sash windows with brick cambered arches, although the first-floor windows seem to be in openings that have been reduced in size. The central round-arched doorway has a plastered surround, a blind fanlight, and a six-panel door with the top four panels glazed. Below the ground floor windows, there are loading doors leading to the cellars. Inside, much of the 19th-century joinery remains intact, including panelled doors and some 18th-century fielded two-panel doors. In the left room on the ground floor, there is a corner cupboard with fluted pilasters and a Doric entablature, along with 20th-century stairs.
