Description
The gate lodges were built around 1858 to a matching design, coinciding with the relocation of a mid-18th century gateway to this location. The gateway now sits against the porches and east and west walls of the gate lodges. The east lodge was later extended.
The lodges are constructed of red brick with stone dressings, set beneath double Roman-tiled roofs and a deep eaves cornice. They flank the park gateway and its screen wall. Each lodge is L-shaped, comprising a main gabled range of a lower storey and attic storey, and a single-storey lean-to with a gabled cross-wing.
The exterior of the lodges features a stone plinth, rusticated stone quoins, and double Roman-tiled roofs. The main range is two bays wide and three bays long, with a single-storey lean-to furthest from the gate and a later gabled cross-wing built into the lean-to, with the east lodge being further extended. Facing the gateway, the inward elevations have a gabled entrance porch flanked by two-over-two paned sash windows and an oeil-de-boeuf window to the attic. A string course runs above the ground floor, and corbelled chimneys rise from the roofs. The front and rear elevations have a large, square-headed two-over-two sash window beneath a tympanum, an oeil-de-boeuf window to the main range, a smaller two-over-two sash window to the lean-to, and a French door to the cross-wing. The cross wings have a single oeil-de-boeuf window on their end elevations, furthest from the gateway.
The west lodge contains a lounge with a fireplace to the ground floor of the main range, a kitchen and bathroom to the lean-to, and a bedroom to the cross range. A winder stair is situated next to the lounge and leads to a bedroom and bathroom in the attic storey. While largely modern, the fixtures and fittings include several earlier four-panelled doors. The interior layout of the east lodge is believed to be similar, though the cross wing has been extended.
