Description

32 Queens Road is a gatekeeper's lodge, now functioning as a house, designed by J B Papworth in 1844 for a large house called Firgrove, which is no longer standing. The building is in a Cottage Ornee style with Russian influences. It features a timber frame with brick infill and sections of vertical logs attached to the exterior, topped with horizontal logs. The roof is pantiled and half-hipped on the sides, with a central clustered brick chimneystack that has four flues. The lodge is a single storey.

The main elevation originally faced east, adjacent to the carriage drive of the main house. It has a verandah supported by five rustic poles on brick padstones. Above the original four plank front door is an open pediment, and to the left is a four-light bay with mullioned and transomed casements that include leaded lights, pintle hinges, and rustic supports. Beneath the verandah are original octagonal black and lozenge-shaped yellow paving stones.

On the north and south fronts, there are two double mullioned and transomed casements on each side, also with leaded lights and pintle hinges; the north front has 20th-century shutters. The west front features rustic trellis, a plank door, and a small 20th-century bathroom extension that matches the original style. Inside, the lodge retains original joinery, including plank doors and a corner bookcase, although there is a 1920s brick Tudor-style fireplace. This building is a rare example of its type, both locally and nationally.
