Description
The entrance gates and walls to Oatlands Palace, dating from around 1545, are constructed of red brick with brick-on-edge coping and rendered coping on the rear walls. The main entrance wall is located at the back of a rectangular site and stands approximately 10 feet high, featuring buttresses every 12 feet. It includes a 4-centred arched gateway, which is now blocked, located about 90 feet from the left end, and has a four-step surround with a stepped parapet above. To the right, there is a smaller gateway, also blocked, which is about 15 feet high and situated 20 feet from the larger gateway. The rear walls facing the street are 10 feet high at the ends, with a central section that is only 3 feet high. Additionally, four entrances have been knocked through.
