Description

The gate piers to Portmore Estate date from the late 17th century and were restored in 1997. They consist of a set of four square ashlar piers, with the inner pair being taller and featuring Doric pilasters on the west and east sides. These inner piers are topped with elaborately carved trophy finials, which are likely the work of John Nost based on a design by William Talman. The outer pair of piers are shorter and connected by brick quadrant walls to brick piers, all of which are topped with new ball finials. The trophy finials on the west and east sides each display a shield with a profile bust beneath a helmet adorned with a feathered crest, all encircled in drapery. The finial on the north side is a replica, while the finial on the south side has been restored.
