Description

The North Lodges to Weston House, built in the early 19th century, are a pair of identical lodge houses located on Norwich Road in Morton on the Hill. They are constructed from yellow gault brick with limestone and stucco dressings, featuring a shallow-pitched slate roof with pedimented gables. The buildings have a moulded stone plinth and rusticated quoins. Each lodge has a central Venetian window set in a semi-circular headed opening, flanked by two Doric columns on pedestals, which support a linking balustrade. Above this, there is a continuous Doric frieze with triglyphs and metopes, topped by a moulded cornice and gable pediments that display arms and a motto on the north and south sides.

Facing the driveway, each lodge features a centrally placed Doric portico in antis with a semi-circular headed entrance door. A central chimney stack is present, with four attached square brick shafts capped with moulded links. The plinth extends to form the base for railings and gate piers, which consist of spear-headed iron railings with a swept top rail and lower dog-rail, along with secondary uprights that are also spear-headed. The rusticated stone gate piers have moulded cappings and ball-finials. The gates have a double sweep to the top rail, matching the detailing of the railings, and feature cast gilded medallion enrichment on each gate. Additionally, there is a panelled gault brick screen wall at the rear yard of each lodge.
