Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church dating from the 14th century, located on Alderford Hall Road. It features a west tower, nave, chancel, and a south porch. The building is constructed of flint, with limestone dressings and quoins. The roof is covered in copper and extends continuously over the nave and chancel, while the south porch has a pantile roof.
The west tower is angle-buttressed and has narrow bell openings, along with a small two-light west window. It is topped by an oversailing parapet adorned with cruciform corner pinnacles. There are remains of a 14th-century arcade that once led to a north aisle, now demolished and blocked with brickwork. The south porch has a 19th-century sundial above the entrance and features fine 14th-century ironwork on the knocker of the south door.
The church includes two south windows with reticulated tracery, and one perpendicular window set under a four-centred arch. The easternmost south window has three blocked ogee-headed lights beneath a square hood mould. Inside, there is an octagonal seven-sacrament font on a stepped podium against the north wall, which shows traces of its original colour. Rood loft stairs are located in the south wall, marking the division between the nave and chancel, which lacks a chancel arch.
