Description

Swannington Manor Farmhouse is a former farmhouse built within the structure of a country house from around 1600, possibly representing the entire or part of one cross wing. It is constructed of red brick and features a pantile roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a continuous outshut to the west. The south gable displays a chevron pattern in its diapering. There are two external chimney stacks from circa 1600 located between the eaves, with a double dentil eaves course below. A string course runs across the stacks at the old eaves level. The northern chimney has two rectangular shafts and one octagonal shaft from the 19th century. A moulded brick kneeler is present on the south parapet gable. The eaves were raised and the roof pitch lowered in the 18th or 19th century.

On the eastern facade, there are four windows with 18th-century openings featuring segmental brick arches. The first-floor windows are casements with glazing bars, while the ground floor has sashes with glazing bars. To the south, there is evidence of a blocked window opening from around 1600, with fragments of an ovolo window head and a brick pediment above. The building has a brick plinth and corbelled eaves, as well as evidence of brick pediments over an inserted 20th-century window on the first floor of the south elevation. The farmhouse retains 17th-century doors and frames, along with 17th-century strings for the stairs and associated timber-framed partitions off the cross passage. Inside, there are 17th-century stopped and chamfered transverse beams, and a 17th-century rubbed brick fireplace on the first floor featuring a cambered brick arch with ovolo moulding in an earlier opening, which has been cut to create a chamfered reveal with lugs. The 19th-century roof reuses 17th-century principal rafters but is set at a lower pitch.
