Description

The boundary wall surrounding the Youth and Community Centres in Fakenham includes sections of the churchyard wall to the south, which dates from the 16th century and later, a mid-19th century east wall with a northern section from the early 18th century, a north wall dated 1803, and a west wall from the late 18th century. The 16th century wall is constructed of flint and brick, while the remainder is made of red brick.

The north section features two lengths of a deeply serpentine crinkle-crankle wall connected by a straight section that has a datestone inscribed TAE 1803. The bricks are laid in a mix of header bond and Flemish bond, topped with triangular coping bricks. The coping on the west part of this wall was replaced in the 1990s.

The east section starts with a segmental doorway flanked by high walls, with the right side rebuilt in the late 20th century. This wall continues with mid-19th century Flemish bond and triangular coping bricks. Near the north end, there is a pedestrian door set under a pointed gauged arch, with the wall to the north dating from the early 18th century.

The west section of the wall slopes down from the north-west corner, built in a mix of header and Flemish bond with triangular coping bricks. The south section is made of mixed flint and brick laid in irregular courses, with the coping lost and patched with mortar.
