Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Grade I listed building located on Oak Street in Fakenham. The north doorway is the only remnant of the Early English church. The chancel, dating from the 14th century, features Decorated north and south windows, along with a large east window comprising five lights. The nave and the north and south aisles also date from the 14th century and include six-bay arcades supported by octagonal piers and double-hollow-chamfered arches. The church has a tall four-stage Perpendicular west tower built around 1400 to 1450, which has flushwork at its base, a west doorway flanked by niches, and a panelled frieze above. The tower is topped with a large six-light west window, panelled buttresses, an embattled parapet, pinnacles, and a Perpendicular traceried belfry. A late 15th-century south porch is present, along with 14th-century sedilia and piscina featuring a crocketed ogee arch. The church also contains a 15th-century octagonal font with carved panels, a 14th-century Decorated screen that has been much restored in the 19th century, and 15th and 16th-century brasses in the chancel. A pedestal poor-box dated 1665 is also located here. The building is constructed of flint with Lincolnshire Limestone dressings and has slate roofs.
