Description
The boundary wall, dating from the early 18th century and altered in the 19th century, extends west and southwest from the belfry of the Church of St Laurence to a gateway. It is constructed of red and blue brick in Flemish bond and runs approximately 10 meters westward to a blocked gap before curving south-southwest for about 115 meters to the gateway, which is located just north of the moat. The 18th-century section includes this curve, with blue headers forming a regular pattern on both sides.
About 65 meters southwest of the belfry, there is a recess on the eastern side within a wider recess, measuring 13 meters wide. The inner corners of this recess are square, while the outer corners have short radius curves in header bond. At the southern end, the wall features a reversed quadrant with a radius of approximately 1.5 meters leading to a square pier of the gateway, which is currently blocked by a wooden fence.
The short section south of the gateway, adjacent to a brick bridge over the moat, lacks architectural interest. The wall has been raised twice with red brick, with the lowest course of the first raise made of long bricks in stretcher bond, measuring up to 0.4 meters long. Each raise features plain copings of bricks laid on edge. The southern part of the double recess has suffered damage, likely from a falling tree, and has been repaired with plain red bricks, one of which is inscribed "TMCL 1919" on the western side. The reversed quadrant at the southern end has also been repaired at both top corners using modern bricks and cement mortar.
The section immediately west of the belfry is of a later build, resembling the wall north of the east end of Blackmore Church, which has a blocked doorway with a segmental arch located 2 meters from the belfry and five buttresses on the northern side, four of which feature two roll mouldings and tumbled courses at the reductions. The coping is similar to that of the main wall, which remains a rare survival in exceptionally good order.
