Description
20 and 21 Broad Row are two shops with living spaces above, dating from the late 15th century for the cellars and primarily from the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building consists of two parallel ranges made of red brick and topped with pantiled roofs. The facade has three storeys and features a four-window layout. There are two late 20th-century shop fronts that have an identical multi-paned design.
On the first floor, there are four 6/6 unhorned sash windows set within flush frames, topped by gauged skewback arches. The second floor has four 3/3 sash windows under segmental gauged arches. A moulded and coved timber eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and the gabled roof has a central ridge stack. The rear of No. 20 is rendered and has late 20th-century casement windows and a fire escape, while the rear of No. 21 features 2-light 19th-century cross casements.
Inside, the ground floor of No. 20 was opened up in the late 20th century. There are exterior late 15th-century brick steps leading down to the cellar, which contains one bay of plastered groin vaulting made of 15th-century brick, although the remainder of the cellar has been rebuilt. The rest of the interiors do not have features of special interest.
