Description
No. 2 Howard Street South is an early 19th-century house that was built on the site of a 16th-century predecessor and converted into a department store in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with the facade stuccoed and colourwashed. It features a roof covered with 20th-century black-glazed pantiles. The structure has three storeys and a dormer attic, with a two-window range. The ground floor has a 20th-century plate-glass shop front beneath a fascia board that extends over adjacent premises. The upper two floors include a canted bay on the left, fitted with unhorned sashes that have very thin 8/8 and 6/6 glazing bars. There is one 6/6 sash window on each upper floor to the right, with the first-floor window having horns. A moulded cornice is located below a Mansard roof, which has one flat-topped dormer featuring a two-light casement.
Inside, the space has been opened up as a sales area in the late 20th century, with bridging beams supported by acanthus consoles. The cellar retains patches of 16th-century brickwork. The canted bay has been partly rebuilt with rolled steel joists in the late 20th century, and the roof features 19th-century rafters.
