Description
No. 5 Broad Row is a house dating from the mid-17th century, which was rebuilt in the late 19th century to serve as a shop with domestic accommodation. The building is constructed of brick and features a pantiled roof. It originally had four storeys, but the upper floor was removed in the 1950s, leaving it with three storeys and a two-window range. The late 20th-century shop front made of plate glass extends through Nos. 3 and 4. The first floor has two unhorned sash windows with 6/6 glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, while the second floor has two similar windows. The parapet was rebuilt in 1990, and the roof is gabled. At the rear, there is a two-storeyed rendered cross-wing, and in the corner of this wing stands a formerly five-storey lookout tower from the early 18th century, which is octagonal and has late 20th-century windows. The interior has been significantly altered in the 20th century, but the interior of the tower features a circular centre newel that rises from a fluted base. Some 17th-century cellars remain, although they have been somewhat altered.
