Description
Great Nast Hyde is a manor house that now serves as a residence for British Aerospace. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a plain tile roof. An early 20th-century west extension has been added in a similar style. The original part of the building is two storeys high with attics.
The south elevation features five windows and has slightly projecting gable ends that were formerly curvilinear. Above the three-window center, there is a matching attic gable. A two-storey gabled porch bay is adorned with a Doric pilaster cement door surround. The outer bays have early 20th-century canted ground floor window trays, with first-floor windows set in shallow projecting brick surrounds. There are moulded stone cornice bands on the first and second floors, and the windows have 20th-century mullioned and transomed casements.
On the garden elevation, the arrangement of windows is 1:2:1, with projecting, parapeted gabled ends that reflect similar detailing. A 20th-century single-storey central extension is also present. The mid-17th-century central ridge chimney stack features three joined shafts, topped by a central 17th-century wooden bell cupola with four arched sides, a moulded cornice, and a lead roof. The west extension includes two chimney stacks styled to match the 17th-century design.
Inside, the east wing contains a large open well staircase with tall newel posts and flat-sided balusters. An adjacent first-floor room features a moulded stone fireplace surround, and the north first-floor corridor has channelled stone door arches.
