Description

Magdalen Laver Hall is a manor house dating back to the 17th century, but largely rebuilt in the late 18th century. The main part of the house is constructed of plastered brickwork, while a rear wing is timber-framed and plastered, with a slate roof. The house is arranged with a main range aligned east-west, facing south, featuring two external brick chimney stacks on the rear wall and one on the west end, all dating to the late 18th century. A rear wing at the west end contains an internal chimney stack, representing the remains of an earlier 17th-century house. A single-storey lean-to extension, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles, was added in the 19th century at the angle of the main range and rear wing.

The south elevation has a central six-panel door, protected by a porch with two fluted Composite wooden columns, pilasters, and a 20th-century pedimented roof. There are four window bays, each containing a late 18th-century double-hung sash window with twelve lights, creating a symmetrical appearance. The roof is low-pitched and fully hipped.

Inside, the staircase has a rosewood rail with two slender square balusters to each tread and scrolled tread ends. Original six-panel doors are present throughout. The ground floor sash windows retain their original double-hung shutters, which are complete and functional, and contain some crown glass. A Bolection moulded wooden fire surround, moved from another part of the house in the 20th century, is found in a ground floor room on the west side. The rear wing’s interior has plain-chamfered ceiling beams, with run-out stops. No framing is exposed.
